The Hammerdown Speedway staff would like to congratulate all of our 2008 divisional champions. You guys put on one heck of a show enroute to your championship seasons! It takes quite the effort from both crew and driver to succeed and call yourselves "Kings of the Mighty Bull Ring"
Super late Model- Shawn Beasley. Not only did he win the title at HDS, but he also won the trophy at Dublin Motor Speedway. In doing so, the"Raeford Rocket" picks up the additional bonus of $8,000.00 to boot! Beasley powered his Rocket chassis to 10 wins at the Ring and picked up the weekley bonus 4 times for winning at both tracks during the same weekend. The Beasley's Body shop mount was sponsorerd this year also by the folks at Cain builders, The Tobacco Road Outlet and Steve Ashworth provided the horsepower.
Open Wheel Modified- Mike Beasley, Smooth. That's the word that best describes The Raeford native, as he rolled to the title this year. At several points during the 2008 campaign, Beasley was touted as the hottest driver in the region as he rolled through the summer with impressive wins at DMS and HDS. His most significant win came in the heat of July as he took the big purse at Dublin on Friday then backed it up with a dominating showing here. That weekend was the turning point for Beasley, as he coasted his way to the title. Mike was sponsored by Hallmark Reality during his championship run.
Super Street- Danny Yarborough. After being tired of running mid-pack, Danny Yarborough decided that enough was enough. Yarborough went out and bought a proven car down in South Carolina and the rest is history. That move along with near perfect attenence at every race, gave the Fayetteville driver his first title in 2008. Yarborough won his first ever race in the early spring at Dublin then backed it up with his first at HDS, showing that he was ready to vie for a title. Though he stumbled at various points in the year, that crew always had the car ready on Saturday night and he did just enough to grab the top spot. Danny thanked Southern Machine Shop in his Championship address along with his family that stood behind what turned out to be a Championship decision.
Young Guns- Dylan Hammond. In what was the best title battle at the Ring, Austin Beasley and Dylan Hammond entered the final night seperated by only 5 points. In the end. Hammond did just enough, coming home in the second spot and Beasley finished 4th, giving the young man his first title ever in a stock car. This fellow has quite the future ahead of him folks. He reminds me of an early Tim Richmond, when Harry Hyde had to draw in the strings and tighten the rope on such a good talent. Not only did he win the title Saturday night, he also jumped into a 270 sprint car and finished second in his first ever attempt. Hammond thanked his family for their support along with Larry Mcguire for his insight through this season.
U- Cars- Larry Mcguire. Loud music, no holes barred, that describes our 2008 U-car Champion. Well known for his loud radio in the car and fearless driving style. Larry Mcguire conqured the always exciting U-car division this year at HDS. His title run wasn't all that simple as Walt "I AM" Bond applied alot of pressure the closing stages of the year, giving Mcguire all he had right until the final checkered flag. Mcguire cut down a tire the last race mid way through the running and with Bond leading the tension mounted on the Fayetteville driver but he was able to mount a charge and come home second securing the title. Mcguire was tickled with his championship and thanked the fans for their suppot of the U-Cars in 2008.
270/600 sprints- Michael Weeks. Being an owner and racing too is tough, just ask the sprint car champion for this season, Michael Weeks. He decided he wanted to see big cars run at the tiny Red Springs facility so what did he do... made it bigger, in about a 2 week peroid, without missing or canceling a race in between. His hard work paid off in both the ownership role as well as the racer role, as he not only put Hammerdown Speedway on the map as a racetrack but also he established himself as a solid Sprint car driver. On many nights, Weeks would win both the 270 and the 600 sprint car races so much so, that he left many just scratching their head. Weeks cruised to both titles giving him his best year to date. In victory lane , he thanked the fans for their supportas well as his girlfriend Kris for mounting his tires and all her help keeping the show rolling.
All in all, what a Points year at Hammerdown Speedway, we saw a little of everything, from one driver winning a huge bonus, to another driver going out on a limb just to win a title. Thanks to everyone who made the first year at HDS so special, it was a blast to have the pleasure of calling the action!
